Why ideal weight matters

Over 50% of dogs in the US are overweight or obese. Excess weight shortens lifespan by up to 2 years and contributes to:

  • • Joint problems and arthritis
  • • Diabetes and insulin resistance
  • • Heart disease and high blood pressure
  • • Reduced quality of life and mobility
  • • Increased anesthesia / surgery risk

Body Condition Score (BCS)

Vets use a 1–9 scale to assess body condition:

  • BCS 1–3: Underweight (ribs and bones visible).
  • BCS 4–5: Ideal (ribs felt easily, visible waist).
  • BCS 6–7: Overweight (ribs hard to feel, waist missing).
  • BCS 8–9: Obese (heavy fat covering).

Each step above ideal = approximately 10–15% over ideal weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast can my dog safely lose weight?

Safe weight loss for dogs is 1–2% of body weight per week. For a 30 kg dog that's 0.3–0.6 kg per week. Faster weight loss can cause muscle loss and other health issues.

Should I use a prescription weight loss food?

For dogs needing to lose more than 15% of body weight, a vet may recommend prescription metabolic food. For mild overweight, simply reducing portions of regular food and cutting treats often works.
