How is adult puppy weight predicted?
Veterinarians use age-based growth percentages. By a certain age, puppies have reached a known percentage of their adult weight:
- •Small breeds reach adult weight by 9–12 months.
- •Medium breeds reach adult weight by 12–15 months.
- •Large breeds reach adult weight by 15–18 months.
- •Giant breeds can take up to 24 months to fully mature.
Quick Formulas (Rule of Thumb)
- Small / Medium puppies: Adult weight ≈ (weight at 6 weeks) × 4
- Large puppies: Adult weight ≈ (weight at 14 weeks) × 2
- Alternative: (current weight ÷ current age in weeks) × 52 = approximate adult weight
These are estimates. Actual adult weight depends on genetics, diet, and health.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does a puppy stop growing?
Small breeds usually stop at 9–12 months, medium at 12–15 months, large at 15–18 months, and giant breeds can take 18–24 months.
What if my puppy is mixed breed?
Estimate by their current paw size and the size of their parents (if known). Large paws relative to body size suggest more growth ahead. When in doubt, choose the larger size category.
How accurate is this calculator?
Predictions are typically within ±15% of actual adult weight. Genetics, nutrition, and neutering timing all affect final weight. Most accurate when calculated between 4–6 months of age.
